Don’t leave the dock without it

When you pack your gear bag, your checklist probably includes the usual gear and emergency equipment, mask, fins, regulator and one of those kits with a few extra o-rings, neoprene patches and regulator mouthpieces. Here are a few extra things that you can throw into your gear bag that will make your dive more comfortable, confident, and safe. Citrus beverages When I surface, the first thing I want to do is get the taste of ocean out of my mouth. As much as I appreciate the smell of the sea and the salty air, I’m not so enthusiastic about having it on my tongue. Water is refreshing, but I find that I can drink a few liters of bottled water and still taste the remnants of the sea in my mouth.

After experimenting with dozens of beverage candidates, I find that Five Alive is hands-down the best cure for oceanmouth. Other citrus juices are good, but none are quite as effective as Five Alive. The better ones were those that contain acidic juices like pineapple and grapefruit.

The juice serves another purpose: rehydration. It seems counterintuitive that spending an hour submerged in water can cause dehydration, but it’s true. The air in your tanks is very dry - necessarily so, since moisture in a tank will rust it from the inside. Just breathing in that dry air for an hour will silently dehydrate you. Drink something when you get back to the boat and you can avoid the symptoms of dehydration such as headache, nausea and dizziness. Long-sleeved rashgard or cotton shirt Did you know that the chemicals in sunscreen are poisonous to reef-dwelling marine life? You need to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation, but you don’t want to slather on the SPF lotion before your dive. Cover up the old fashioned way with a cotton shirt or a long-sleeved rashguard. Laminated Dive Table Chart Are you dependent on your computer? Go back and review your certification training and learn how to calculate your residual nitrogen using tables. Computers are great tools, but it behooves every diver to remember how to manage their nitrogen levels without gadgetry. A “dry bag” A dry bag needn’t be anything fancy - inexpensive bags with resealable flaps are available at most camping or marine supply stores. They don’t need to be watertight to 100 ft - since you leave them on the boat in your gear bag. My favorite is a bright yellow, rubber bag with a top that folds over three times and tucks into itself for an easy watertight seal. Many divers on a budget will use a variety of disposable resealable freezer bags.

In my dry bag, I keep:

•Tissues - a necessity. After purging my mask a few times, my sinuses get rebellious. •Cotton Swabs - some gentle attention to get the water out of my ears. •A photocopy of my identification & passport - just in case •Band-aids - because I stub my toes on boats •Everything that was in my pockets - Before donning my wetsuit, my dry bag (by virtue of its sealability) is a good place to keep a cell phone, camera, wallet, jewelry, car keys, etc. Tell someone where you are going and who you’re with. Make this a habit, so you don’t need to be concerned when an emergency arises.

First, make sure the dive operator knows who you are, where you are staying, and who to contact in case of an emergency. If you are injured during a dive, the dive operators might whisk you directly to the nearest hospital, medical clinic or decompression chamber. If the medical staff can’t determine your identity, it can complicate your medical attention.

Second, tell someone who isn’t diving with you where you are going. That could be others in your party, the hotel concierge, or a phone call to a relative back home. Tell them the name of the dive shop, your destination, the departure time and estimated return time for your dive excursion. If you know it, include the names of the boat, its captain, and divemaster. If you are traveling alone or diving in a group, write the information down and leave it with the hotel office. If your hotel is near a popular diving spot, they will be used to that sort of thing.

You should be lustrous today to analyze if you have a super bargain or if you don’t with the bank that offers you a loan. 6 percent loan rate may look so reasonable but will that be incessant after you’re going to pay back your bank loan.

Examine to see if the merchant bank who you a credit loan is good. At present you can inquire rates quickly on the internet and ascertain if there are other possible traps you should know about. This is why now you need to check over and image if you can have a money loan at a estimable percent interest rate. A lot of the moneylenders wil show you a rate that is looking effective but feels mischievously or so after some time. It makes no difference if you live in Danville Virginia or in Nampa Idaho a beneficial online investigation will save you often lots of disoblige. A moneylender in Berkeley California or so may have a total different actual rate of interest for a 5000 dollar loan then a merchant bank in Joliet Illinois and that makes a vast clear gap in your yearly costs.

A good football stadium can make even a losing game not seem like a total loss. If you’re not a fan of one of the top teams in the NFL then at least you may be a fan who gets to watch games in one of the top stadiums the NFL has to offer. Out of all 31 stadiums the NFL teams play in, one man went out and ranked them from best to worst. Thanks to Dan Pompei you can have an idea of where you’d like to view a game.

Coming in first was Qwest Field belonging to the Seattle Seahawks. The stadium offers a beautiful view of Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and the Seattle Skyline. >From various points in the stadium a fan can view these attractions, along with the game. How does it get any better? The field isn’t far from downtown Seattle so a fan does not have to go far to do some pre and post game partying.

The second best stadium belongs to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Raymond James Stadium has a layout all its own. From the palm trees in the end zone to the flags along the top of the stadium, this place really stands out. The north end zone also sports a 103 foot long pirate ship in Buccaneer Cove is what really separates this stadium from the rest. And for those fans who love sun, every part of the stadium gets it so no one is left in the dark.

Coming in third is Houston’s Reliant Stadium. Since the dome is made from a fiberglass fabric, sun is a natural star in this stadium. Enough light is allowed in the stadium for it to have natural grass which the players seem to love and the game will be fun to watch whether the dome is open or closed.

In fourth place is Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions. Ranked by Dan as the best indoor stadium ever, the brick and exposed duct work make this stadium feel like a trendy oversized loft that was converted from an oversized factory. With a seven story atrium and a connection to Hudson’s warehouses, Ford Field was built like more of a workplace than a football stadium. Thanks to the Ford family, the field has really invigorated Detroit’s downtown area.

And finally, in fifth place comes Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio. With this stadium do you not only get to view a good football game but you can also travel a few minutes to view the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. Even the architects felt they should let fans see some of the city by creating gaps in the seating bowl where fans can look upon downtown Cleveland. Also, with all of the glass in the stadium, a fan doesn’t have to feel as confined as in other stadiums where all they see are other fans and the game.

Whether it’s winter time or not, you can benefit a great deal by working on your swing indoors. And there’ll be no danger of breaking an office window or knocking over things at home.

Golf training has come a long way from simply going out on the course with a pro, and whacking at the ball. This is the age of high tech in almost everything, including sports, and golf is certainly no exception.

In fact, the feedback available to golfers working on various facets of their game, is invaluable when you incorporate such tools as streaming video and instant playback. Out on the course, you’re not always going to have someone watching what you do, and even if you “feel” the shot has gone wrong, there’s no way of learning from your mistake.

That’s why visual aids are the key to success of many indoor instruction facilities. They will offer both lessons and training sessions, a combination that allows you to learn, and then practice what you have been studying with the instructor. Trained staff will set you up in the practice areas with your equipment, and familiarize you with using the video feedback.

This is a giant leap forward from practicing on your own, out on the course. There are times when you know things like your grip didn’t feel right, but have no idea what was wrong, and the video images can show you that, allowing you to correct it immediately and practice a better grip that will improve your swing.

Not all facets of the game can be taught indoors like this. The primary areas that indoor training is good for, are grip, swing, putting, and perhaps the short game. But it’s an excellent way to start for new golfers, and provides a fun afternoon or evening out during the winter, when the green is covered in white!

As the new golf season rolls around you may find yourself saying the words, “I think I’ve got it”, to yourself. Why? Because for most of us, the beginning of the season brings us some surprisingly good rounds of golf. It’s funny how you haven’t played golf seriously in about 4-6 months, yet right out of the gate, you end up playing some of the best golf of the year. This, of course, leaves you scratching your head because you remember how last year wasn’t so great. So what happened over the course of the winter that is allowing you to play so well now?

Maybe your new found skill occurs because you took a break over the winter months? Maybe it’s the new clubs you received for Christmas? Maybe you read a tip in a golf magazine? Or maybe you are taking the game less seriously? To be honest with you, it’s a little bit of all of these things. Here’s what I mean …

Taking a Break

When you take a break for a few months over the winter you seem to forget what you were working on at the end of last year. The things that were important to you then, aren’t so important anymore. This not only eases your mind but it also allows you to lighten up a little and stop you worrying about your swing. Because of this, you may play a little better at the start of the year.

Excuses … Excuses

Starting a new season gives you a great excuse if you play poorly. What is it? Simple … it’s the beginning of the season! Typically, the beginning of the season allows you to be a little more care free. This care free attitude allows you to have more fun and minimize your expectations. If your expectations are low you may be pleasantly surprised at how well you play.

Golf Tips

How does a golf tip make you play better golf at the beginning of the year? The obvious reason is that it may actually help to improve your swing. Secondly, it gets you thinking of 1 swing thought instead of 10. This concentration on only one thing allows you to remain focused instead of confused. This kind of clarity can help you play quite well at the beginning of the season as well.

New Equipment

When you try a new driver or putter it feels different versus your old club. Because of this, you’re thinking so much about the new feel of the new club that you forget about your swing. When you don’t think about your swing, you usually hit the ball quite well. So this too can add to some great rounds at the beginning of the season.

Summing It All Up

To sum it all up, all of these things I mentioned stop you from thinking too much about the mechanics of your swing when you go to play. If you aren’t thinking about the mechanics of your swing, you can think about getting the ball in the hole which is what you should be always thinking about every time you play, not just at the beginning of the season. Paul Wilson

When you start the search for a kayak car rack, you quickly discover there’s a large variety to choose from. There are several ways that you can travel with your kayak on the roof of your vehicle - car, truck or SUV.

So, your primary goal is to choose the right car rack for your vehicle and one that securely holds your kayak. You want to ensure that the system you purchase is reliable and a good fit to hold your size kayak - and even multiple kayaks.

First, you need to familiarize yourself with the three main types of kayak mountings. Each is efficient and reliable, but the one that’s best for you depends on the size of your kayak and the type of vehicle you’ll be using to get from adventure to adventure.

Saddle System

The saddle system car rack consists of four padded holders that are attached to your vehicle for the kayak to rest on. This car rack system also combines with straps that wrap around the kayak to prevent your craft from skimming places it shouldn’t - like the pavement!

Roller System

The roller rack system is the exact same as the saddle system except that it has wheels. This makes for a easy loading and easy removing of the kayak. Even though kayaks aren’t that heavy, if you want an easy go of it then you’ll want to consider a roller system.

Verticle Support System

As the name implies, the verticle support system hold your kayak upright. This is a holder that usually goes on the back of your vehicle and it’s often used on big rigs like vans or SUVs. The verticle support system incorporate upright poles and straps to ensure your kayak stays in its upright position for the entire ride.

Although there are a limited number of verticle systems available, it is most common to see kayakers travelling with with their kayak on the roof of their vehicle. But these are great systems to use and extremely reliable if installed correctly - which goes without saying for each of the systems we describe.

So get the right car rack for your needs, put in on your car, and take off for a kayaking spot - like Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona, Arizona! Kayaking is a great workout and tons of fitness fun.

No matter what the season, camping can be a wondrous experience and a welcome relief from the cramped confines of city life. With the proper preparation and camping gear, hikes and overnight stays in the outdoors can rejuvenate the mind and body. Unfortunately, poor planning can result in accidents, exposure, and injuries. To get the most out of your camping experience, follow these simple guidelines:

* Expect the unexpected. Before you depart, give some thought to worst-case scenarios and how you would deal with those emergencies. For example, discuss with your traveling companions the options for an encounter with a bear, or what to do if one of you gets lost.

* Communicate. Email copies of your itinerary to family members and post on one your refrigerator. Be sure to sign in and out when using a campground, and sign in and out with a ranger prior to starting a wilderness hike. Should something go amiss, your movements can more easily be tracked. Consider purchasing two-way radios for you and your traveling companions to use on your trip. If someone does get lost, they’ll have a way to communicate.

* Bring the right camping gear. Don’t let sudden weather changes catch you off-guard. Waterproof backpacks and tents, as well as cold weather sleeping bags, will minimize your exposure and ensure a pleasant camping experience.

* Pack the right clothes. The right camping gear includes the right clothing. Layer clothes for optimum comfort, so you can add or remove layers as the temperature changes. Be sure to pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket and pants.

* Know where you’re going. Getting lost in the wilderness is frightening and potentially deadly. Make sure you have detailed maps of the area, including a topographical map, and consider taking along a GPS system and two-way radios. Also pack a whistle, so you can signal if necessary.

* Beware of the critters. Insect bites and stings can ruin a great trip. Use DEET-based insect repellent, and re-apply as needed. At the end of each day, check for ticks - especially behind the ears, under the arms, and in the groin area - as they are carriers of Lyme disease. When selecting a site to stow your camping gear, stay away from the berry bushes, a prime foraging area for bears.

* Practice fire safety. Fire is always a potential hazard. Keep your campfire as small as is feasible. If possible, utilize a fire pit that others have previously used. Make sure the pit has a ring of rocks around it, and never build a fire pit where there are overhanging branches. Keep a bucket of water near the fire, and have someone station near a burning fire at all times to keep watch over it.

With the right camping gear and preparation, your getaway is sure to be a success!

The NFL’s “rematch weekend” gets underway on Saturday at 4:30 ET with Washington at Seattle and follows at 8:00 ET with New England at Denver. Sunday’s games are Pittsburgh at Indianapolis, followed by Carolina at Chicago.

The four Divisional Round games are all rematches from the regular season. The same situation occurred last year in this round and the SU winner of the regular season meeting was able to win the playoff rematch, each time. The only team to not ‘cover’ in its win, was the Steelers, who beat the Jets 20-17 in OT as a nine-point favorite. Will it be deja vu all over again?

My free play for Saturday is in college hoops and I’m taking USC over Washington State in a game that tips at 8:00 ET. BOTH of my NFL plays are available right now, my 20* Divisional GOY and my latest LEGEND Play (14-2 in FB ‘05!). College BKB fans, I’m following my 20* Pac-10 GOY winner on Washington (Thursday) with my 20* WCC Game of the Year, on Saturday. I’ve got more CBB and NBA action for Saturday, so be sure to check the site after 9:00 ET.

Washington at Seattle

The storyline of this game is Washington, a No. 6 seed, enters this game with the longest current winning streak of any 2005 playoff team, having won SIX straight games both SU and ATS. The number six is relevant to Seattle as well, as that’s the exact number of playoff losses the Seahawks have suffered since the team’s last playoff win in 1984. Three of those playoff losses have come under Mike Holmgren, including two at home!

The Seahawks lost at home 20-17 to Miami in 1999, they lost in OT at Green Bay (33-27) in 2003 and last year, lost at home to St Louis by the score of 27-20. That loss was particularly tough to take, as Seattle lost all three games in 2004 to the Rams. Is this the year the Seahawks finally win?

If not here, then when? The Seahawks are one of two NFL teams to have gone 8-0 at home this year (6-2 ATS) and at 13-3, own the NFC’s best record. However, Seattle played just five games this season against opponents with a record of .500 or better, going 3-2 SU and 1-4 ATS.

The wins came in non-covers against the Cowboys and Giants plus against an Indy team in Week 16, which played few of its starters and was recovering from the news of Dungy’s son’s death. Seattle lost at Jacksonville and Washington.

Washington has basically won six consecutive “do-or-die” games and one has to wonder if Joe Gibbs’ team will be “out of gas.” History is surely not on Washington’s side, as since 1990 (12-team format), just NINE of 30 No. 6 seeds have won their wildcard games. Of those nine winners, NONE have won in the divisional round (average loss was by 33.7-13.6 PPG).

Is history about to change? It already has, as BOTH No. 6 seeds (Pittsburgh and Washington) won their first-round games for the first time ever!

New England at Denver

Will Denver be Tom Brady’s “Waterloo?” As everyone knows, Brady is a perfect 10-0 in his playoff career and New England’s 10 consecutive postseason wins is an NFL record. Denver joined Seattle at 8-0 at home this year and surely be confident as the Broncos beat the Pats back in Week 6 here, 28-20. The game was not as close as the final score, as the Broncos led 21-3 at the half and 28-3 midway through the third quarter.

Brady’s playoff numbers are quite impressive, as he owns a completion percentage of 61.9 percent, has thrown for an average of 215.2 YPG and thrown for 14 TDs with just three interceptions. In seven of his 10 playoff games, Brady has not thrown an interception, including his last four!

Denver’s QB Jake Plummer has made four previous playoff starts. He won his first back in 1998 when he led the Cardinals to a 20-7 win over the Cowboys in Dallas. However, he’s lost his last three, by scores of 41-21, 41-10 and 49-24. His last two playoff games came with the Broncos in losses at Indianapolis to the Colts.

The good news for both Plummer and Denver is, this game is at home. Plummer has thrown just TWO interceptions (227 attempts) in eight home games this year and Denver, which has lost all three of its post-Elway playoff games (all on the road!), finally gets a home game!

It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut when buying Christmas gifts: you buy a great one for your son so you have to find one just as good for your daughter. Perhaps you spent loads on your Mother but can’t find anything that’s worth the price for your Father too?

It’s definitely a tricky situation and that’s why the internet and the high street stores are branching out and stocking much more unique gifts such as customizable apparel, remote control helicopters, digital photo frames and all kinds of thing that glow. There are certain websites online to help you out this Christmas. Their extensive range of Christmas gifts for him or her, gadgets, experiences, toys, games and bits are free to browse and once you’ve made your choices all you need do is add it to your basket, complete the checkout process and sit back and relax until it arrives.

There’s just one thing to remember when shopping for Christmas gifts online, and that’s that they don’t have chip and pin machines. They need to secure your data in another way and there’s a simple way to find out if a site you’re buying from is secure and therefore legit. When you click ‘proceed to checkout’ to pay for your items the address bar at the top of the browser should become a different colour (usually green, pink or blue rather than white). If you then right click on it a bubble will come up saying who your data is being secured by. What this means is that your data is being ‘encrypted’ or coded so that it is impossible to read by anyone but the computer receiving the order. It would probably take a thousand very powerful computers around 1000 years to work out what the information was that was sent, so there’s your piece of mind!

There are many products available at these online retailers that can’t be found anywhere else, so you’ll never have to worry that somebody else has bought the same Xmas gift for someone.

Whether you’re just looking for silly stocking fillers or a wonderfully meaningful gift, you might just find it online.
