Bosses Should Include Driving Polices in Health and Safety Plans, Says Law Firm
A law firm has called upon employers to formulate and implement a proper driving policy for their workers.
Dangerous driving conditions in the UK and the wettest-ever November have prompted Penningtons Solicitors LLP to make the appeal, with the firm pointing out that nearly a third of all road accidents in Britain take place when people are travelling for work-related activities.
Philippa Luscombe of Penningtons said that recent data reveals that almost 20 fatalities and 250 serious injuries occur per week while people are driving or being driven around for work-related tasks. She stated that employers could be charged under the Corporate Manslaughter Act 2007 or asked to pay damages under a personal injury claim if they fail to evaluate the repercussions of an employee’s accident.
Luscombe stressed that bosses should not only include some form of driving policy into their heath and safety strategy but should also ask the staff and senior executives to take such matters seriously. She asked the bosses to drive safely and set an example before their workers.
Luscombe also spelt out some benefits of a good driving policy. According to her, employees driving cautiously at the right speeds will reduce the company’s expenditure on maintenance of vehicles and fuel. Premiums for both motor and employers’ liability insurance will be lowered if claims are less, the time spent on accident claims and investigations will also be less, and finally, if fewer accidents occur, the number of workers staying away from work will also come down.
