Hyper Flavor

No hype, all flavor

What Are the Canvas Print Trends for 2010?

Ask anybody their opinion on graffiti, and you’ll get opinions of love and hatred : some individuals find it a nuisance, others a subtle artform. On the plus side, gifted creatives such as Banksy have made graffiti an artform that is pleasing on the eye, using stencils to create difficult graphics loaded with a nuanced political point. This kind of graffiti was certain to become fashionable with the public and the art critics : visually pleasing and intellectually satisfying. This form of graffiti is even purchased as graffiti canvas art, and placed on the walls of middle class households and office reception areas.

However, what about the other end of the spectrum? – the gangbanger, the tagger, the street urchin – this is just seen as antisocial, a crime committed by the talentless. But is graffiti simply art? To a lot of people, it’s not only an artform, but a means to mark territory, or even a rejection of society altogether : anti-art, anti-social, anti-establishment.

Spraying has invariably been a covert pursuit, although the results are public facing. The targeted audience is oftentimes unbeknown. Is it for a rival gang? A message to a single person? To the public? Possibly it’s simply uncalled-for and out of nothing to do.

Whatever the causes may be, there appears to be some kind of permanent demand to spray on walls. Some city councils have admitted that graffiti isn’t a short-term craze, so they’ve designated zones where graffiti is permitted – usually unoccupied areas, but now and then more civic zones like temporary boarding that surrounds inner city buildings under construction.
