The Bacardi Bat Project

The beverage manufacturer, Bacardi, has launched a record label that commissions songs from artists and has made them available as free MP3 downloads. The Bacardi Bat Project derives its name from the bat symbol that embellishes the Bacardi bottles. The symbol is a representation of the bat colony that was nearby the original Bacardi Cuba distillery.

None of the songs made available on the Bacardi Bat Project has been released before, making it the sole place to unearth these tracks. The Bacardi Bat Project is somewhat similar to the RCRD LBL model only that Bacardi remains as the only sponsor and that the record contains less music than RCRD LBL. Bacardi has also commissioned remixes and live tracks to go along with the studio tracks. The label’s first release was Metronomy’s “A Thing for Me,” which was previously commissioned for a film the company has shown in Miami. Included in the record is four remixes of the song including Breakbot’s own version.

The idea for the project was to allow listeners to get a hold of free music as well as artists to get paid and for the Bacardi brand to expand as music fans continue to hunt for the tracks. Having no website for this, Bacardi’s line of attack was to circulate the tracks through blogs. In addition the beverage firm has also collaborated with Groove Armada for a series of live events in 2008.

From having to contend with fruit bats to distributing digital media in the Internet, Bacardi Cuba has certainly gone a long way. Bacardi Cuba also survived the Castro revolution, a testament to the tenacity of the family running the company.
